STANDARDS & TECHNICAL GUIDANCE

Apply the right
reference.

Standards, manufacturer instructions and local approvals answer different questions. This library does not issue a universal maintenance interval or certify compliance.

Identify the scope first.

Determine whether the asset is part of a private fire-protection system or a municipal water network. Confirm ownership, the responsible authority, the locally adopted requirements and the applicable edition. The newest publisher edition is not proof of local adoption.

NFPA 25

NFPA’s official scope page describes inspection, testing and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems. It lists a 2026 edition. This review did not verify local adoption or assert clause-level intervals for an individual property.

NFPA 24

The official publisher describes installation of private fire service mains and appurtenances. Installation and acceptance requirements are different from ongoing maintenance scope. Design and authority review remain site-specific.

AWWA M17

AWWA lists M17 as its fire-hydrant installation, field-testing and maintenance manual. Use an appropriate authorized copy with the equipment instructions and utility procedures. The complete paid manual was not reviewed or reproduced here.

Manufacturer instructions

Use the model, year, configuration and document applicability together. A recommendation in a historical manual should not be labelled as a universal NFPA requirement. Do not combine numerical procedures from different hydrant designs.
